Electric power on the farm, too

Three complementary uses: yard handling, lifting and vineyard work. Ordered by increasing battery capacity, not equivalent power or productivity. References for project assessment, not KSPH stock.

On farms, compare fixed rooftop PV with mobile solar according to the working location. Charging must match schedules, season and chargers; battery capacity is not daily consumption. These examples do not establish a solar-autonomous working day or replacement of a large diesel tractor for heavy work.

Solar packs: from portable sets to containers

PV power and stored energy are different quantities. Small packs primarily serve tools and auxiliary loads; they do not replace a charging system for large excavators.

Diesel or electric: what does a working day cost?

Illustrative construction example based on Volvo, not a test of the featured models or an estimate for a tractor or farm loader. Basis: 8 diesel hours including 35% idling, corresponding to 5.2 electric working hours for assumed equivalent work. A 10% charging-energy overhead is a calculation assumption.

Diesel or electric: what does a working day cost?
ParameterDieselElectric · gridElectric · 50% solar
Energy price excl. VAT€1.8765 / L€0.2366 / kWh€0.2366 / kWh (grid)
Reference consumption2.5 L / h4.9 kWh / h4.9 kWh / h
Energy per day20 L28.028 kWh14.014 kWh grid + 14.014 kWh PV
Purchased energy / day€37.53€6.63€3.32 + PV pack costs
Purchased energy / 200 days€7,506.00€1,326.28€663.14 + PV pack costs

The final column counts only the remaining grid electricity bill. Solar pack purchase, depreciation, maintenance and transport are additional: solar power is not free. The 50% share is an assumption, not guaranteed output. No payback period is inferred.

Why consider electric — and what needs costing

Less engine maintenance

No diesel-engine oil changes or diesel exhaust after-treatment. Hydraulics, tracks, electronics and batteries still need maintenance. No invented repair prices.

Lifetime: check the warranty

The battery is not the entire machine. Request guaranteed capacity, cycles, repairability and replacement costs. A longer lifetime is not automatic.

Design PV and charging together

Daily energy, charger power, weather, season, available space and grid backup must align. Less motor noise and no machine exhaust do not mean no lifecycle impact.

Sources and calculations

Diesel: ADAC, 07/10/2026, €2.233/L including VAT, rounded to €1.8765/L excluding 19% VAT. Electricity: Destatis, first half of 2026, €0.2366/kWh excluding VAT and other deductible taxes for 20–500 MWh/year. Averages from different periods, not your tariff. Fuel and CO₂ taxes are not added again. Check tax treatment, fixed and demand charges.

Calculation: 8 × 2.5 = 20 L; 8 × 65% × 4.9 × 1.10 = 28.028 kWh supplied. The solar example uses 14.014 kWh on site. Prices are held constant for 200 days for illustration, not as a forecast.

Assess my project

Prepare your enquiry

Share your available project data so we can compare suitable solutions.

  • Machine type, work to perform, daily operating hours and annual working days.
  • Diesel or electricity consumption, bills, quotes and available technical specifications.
  • Location, season, solar space, grid connection, breaks, schedule and budget.

Your questions

Is electric always cheaper?

No. The outcome depends on usage, prices, charging and investment. KSPH compares the total cost of the same work with its partners. We do not quote savings without site-specific data.

Can the solar pack power every machine?

Not automatically. From small equipment to large machines, energy needs, available power and operating times must be checked. With its partners, KSPH assesses suitable solar generation, optional storage and backup power.
